Back in the day before Boston became a big sports town, it was very music driven with many local original bands and lots of places to perform: TT the Bear’s, SkyBar, the Middle East Club, etc. Radio stations WAAF, WBCN, WMFO, Emerson College Radio and others had hours dedicated to local original groups, along with legendary radio personalities. Shred was on WBCN, Micky D with WMFO, and my friend Carmaleta on WAAF. During those years, radio was a huge part of my music journey in Boston. I was always so excited to be invited into their studios. Cleaning out my closet I realize over the last 30 years I have about 25 live radio performances, some with interviews and tracks from my albums played locally. The most played song was “New Soil” and at one point was in the top 40 of local songs played on WBCN, and “Angie Baby” got played on different stations. But as far as live radio performances, I’ll list my favorites: the most airplay and most live appearances was WAAF with Carmaleta on a show called Bay State Rock, Sundays live from 10:00pm to midnight - all local bands, 20 minute gigs each with an interview. For the music, you could do either a live show or a recording; I always choose live performances, with typically 1-3 songs. It was always fun after to get responses from listeners! Carmaleta became a great friend, and I will always admire what she did for decades for me and the whole Boston Rock Scene.
